Oriundo de Bilbao, empecé mi carrera profesional en el 2001 en Londres, en un programa de graduados de Pearson y terminé dirigiendo una división de €200M en Oxford University Press. He vivido en varios lugares, visitado decenas de países, lanzado negocios digitales desde cero, movido a miles de estudiantes a online en plena pandemia, fallado un puñado de veces y me he divertido mucho, casi siempre. De todas las transformaciones que he liderado, he descubierto que ni la digital ni la operativa son las más difíciles — sino la humana. Pero cuando esa funciona... magia.
He liderado equipos pequeños, medianos, grandes y muy grandes y me ha servido para impresionar a los impresionables, pero no tengo duda de que los mejores líderes lideran también sin equipo. He trabajado en organizaciones globales, siempre con el mismo objetivo: encontrar la intersección entre lo que una organización hace bien y lo que el futuro exige, y construir el puente entre los dos.
Hoy uso mi experiencia para ayudar a líderes y organizaciones que no solo necesiten, sino que quieran crecer, evolucionar, transformarse o internacionalizarse. Elijo los proyectos por lo que intentan construir y por la pasión y las ganas de quien los lidera. Hay suficientes consultores en el mundo, yo no lo soy. Aparte de todo esto, disfruto con la enseñanza — he sido profesor universitario puntualmente — y me apasiona el debate y el pensamiento crítico. El saber pensar y escuchar, tanto lo que se dice y, quizás más importante, lo que no se dice. Una habilidad difícil de replicar, haz de ser más humano tu ventaja competitiva.
Originally from Bilbao, I started my professional career in London, back in 2001, when I joined the Pearson graduate trainee programme, and ended up running a €200M division at Oxford University Press. If that doesn't impress you, we are off to a good start. I've lived in several places, visited dozens of countries, launched digital businesses from scratch, moved thousands of students online mid-pandemic, failed a handful of times and had a lot of fun along the way. Of all the transformations I've led, I've discovered that neither the digital nor the operational ones are the hardest — the human one is. But when that one works… magic.
I've led small, medium, large and very large teams and it's been useful for impressing the impressionable, but I am certain that the best leaders do not need a reporting line to lead. I've worked in global organisations, always with the same goal: finding the intersection between what an organisation does well and what the future demands, and building the bridge between the two.
Today I use my experience to help leaders and organisations that don't just need to, but genuinely want to grow, evolve, transform or go international. I choose projects based on what they're trying to build and the passion and drive of the people behind them. There are enough consultants in the world — I'm not one of them. Beyond all this, I enjoy teaching — I've collaborated on occasion as a visiting professor — and I'm passionate about debate and critical thinking. Knowing how to reflect and how to listen — to what is said, and perhaps more importantly, to what isn't. A human skill hard to replicate that might end up being your competitive advantage.
